THE HOLY SPIRIT

“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you, But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” ~John 14:25-26

The Holy Spirit is the power by which believers come to Christ and see with new eyes of faith.

The Holy Spirit helps us understand our walk with God and brings us to new birth. It is through the Helper, Holy Spirit, that the Father & Son abide with disciples.

The Holy Spirit is the divine distributor of the good things purchased by the Son and ordained by the Father.

The Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Spirit | The Son says what He hears from the Father, The Father witnesses to and glorifies the Son. The Father and Son honor the Holy Spirit by commissioning Him to speak in their name, The Holy Spirit honors the Father and Son by helping the community of believers.

The Holy Spirit will:

  1. Illumine (explain clearly) Jesus’ teachings

  2. Empower us to fulfill our calling

  3. Work in the life of the individual believer and the church.

  4. Provide new ability

  5. Give knowledge, discernment, and understanding

The only consistent way to overcome the sinful desire of our human nature is to allow the power of the Holy Spirit to take us step by step as He works through our spirit. Walking each moment in God’s word under the yielding and heeding of the Holy Spirit assures absolute victory over the desire of our sinful nature.

We should obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit, in order to do so we must be able to hear and yield.

How do we know it’s the Holy Sprit?:

  1. The Holy Spirit cannot go against the nature of the Father and Son (Study their nature)

  2. The Holy Spirit cannot go against the truth of the Word (Stay in the Word)

  3. The Holy Sprit WILL lead you into the direction of love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. (Life producing qualities of the Spirit)

  4. The Holy Spirit cannot/will not put you in a position that does not result in victory.

  5. The Holy Spirit will not lead you into adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions (heated disagreements), jealousies, outburst of wrath, selfish ambitions, envy, murder, drunkenness, or revelries. (Death producing qualities of the Flesh)

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament:

via NKJV Study Bible

  1. The Spirit participated in the creating. Genesis 1:2

  2. The Spirit gives life to humanity and other creatures. Psalms 102:29-30

  3. The Spirit came upon certain judges, warriors, and prophet in a way that gave them extraordinary power for example, Joshua (Numbers 27:18), Othniel (Judges 3:10), Gideon (6:34), Samson (13:25:14:6)

  4. The Spirit played a prominent role in the long span of Old Testament prophecy. David declare that “the Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue” (2 Samuel 23:2).

  5. The Spirit inspired holiness in the OT believers (Psalms 143:10). Scripture promised that someday God would put His Spirit in His people in a way that would cause them to live according to His statues (Ezekiel 36:27).

  6. The Spirit was crucial in helping God’s people anticipate the ministry of the Messiah.

Bible Verses:

Isaiah 42:1,5 “Behold! My Servant (Christ) whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. 5 Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it.”

Matthew 3:11 “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

Matthew 12:32 “Anyone who speaks a word against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”

Luke 11:13 “If you being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.”

John 14:16-17 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever. The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither see Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

John 14:13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He has He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

John 20:22 “He breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Sprit.”

Ephesians 1:13-14 “In Him you also trusted after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also, having believed you were sealed with the Holy Sprit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”

Romans 8:2 “And because you belong to Him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death”

Romans 8:5-6 “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Romans 8:9 “But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you, And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ (Holy Spirit), they do not belong to Christ.”

Romans 8:11 “The Sprit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”

Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought , but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered.

Galatians 5:16-17 “ I say then: Walk in the Sprit , and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Galatians 5:22 “ The Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control.”

Galatians 5:25 “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 2:12 “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.”

1 Corinthians 12: 4-11 “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all; for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Sprit, to another the working of miracle to another prophecy, to another discerning of sprits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Sprit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” | We have all received one or more of these spiritual gifts but in order to see it’s manifestation we must 1. Allow the Holy Sprit into our lives (requires surrendering) 2. We must be able to heed (pay attention to; take notice of.) the voice/nudging of the Holy Sprit.

Titus 3:4-6 “But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to Him mercy He saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

Exodus 31:1-5 “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, see, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Her, of the tribe of Judah, And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood and to work all manner of workmanship.” | So just to put it into context, the Lord had commanded Moses and the people to build for Him a tabernacle (a place of meeting). The Lord was very specific in how this tabernacle was to be built, He covered every detail, even the smallest one—so this verse is to show that God through the work of the Holy Spirit will empower us to do what He has instructed.  Continue reading Exodus 31:6-11.

Luke 1:67 “Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying: Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David.”| Zacharias was filled with the Holy Sprit to announce the coming promise of God, Jesus. This He could not do without the enabling of the Holy Spirit. Prophesy  (1. foretelling future events. 2.forthtelling the Word of God. 3. Praising God)

Acts 2:1-4 “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Sprit gave them utterance. | Here we see the Holy Spirit give the ability to speak in different tongues (languages).

Acts 4:8 “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man by what means he has been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom your crucified, whom God raided from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.”| Here we see the Holy Spirit giving Peter the boldness to speak for God’s work, Jesus promised that His disciples would be able to stand before kings and rulers and that the Spirit of God within them would put in their minds exactly what to see to these leaders.

My prayer is that this will help you gain a better understanding of the Holy Spirit and the importance that He has in your life.
